Flooding

Broadland Environmental Services Ltd (BESL) were responsible for a 20 million pounds programme of works to strengthen river banks and to allieviate flooding. As part of this project they sealed cracks and joints in the concrete flood walls behind some bungalows. These flood walls are intended to hold water in the river, on the rhond where our bungalows are built and to stop flood water entering the marshes. In the past, bungalow owners have made holes in or beneath the flood wall to try and drain their plots from river water. This is potentially dangerous as soil from plots filters through onto the marshes. One bungalow owner on the Ludham bank had to call in the Environment Agency to steel pile the marsh side of their plot as their ground was disappearing into the marshes during high tides.

The marshland often has flood water on it during the winter, reaching unprecedented levels 2023 partly due to a prolonged period of low pressure throughout October.

RTTA members can sign up for AUTOMATIC FLOOD RISK WARNINGS to their email address or mobile phone. This is a free Government run service that alerts you of flood warnings and alerts that affect your property's address, and notifies you again when the risk is over.

Flood insurance is an ongoing concern for bungalow owners. BIBA has published a booklet with tips on buying flood insurance.

FLOOD RE is a joint initiative between Government and insurers. Insurers can pass on the flood risk element to be covered by Flood Re, making flood cover more affordable. You can find an insurer here.

The Flood Insurance Directory was created by Flood Re, British Insurance Broker's Association (BIBA) and the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

We are lucky to have one of Britain's great wildlife spectacles on our doorstep. During November/December the Atlantic Grey seals use our beaches to give birth and mate again for the season ahead.

The beaches are closed when the seals are giving birth both for their protection and yours, but you can see them easily from viewing platforms at Horsey and from the dunes at Winterton.

It is important not to get too close to them. They can bite and many pups get abandoned each year by mums who have been disturbed. If you would like to visit, you can read the 'Friends of Horsey Seals' guidelines, who warden the area during breeding season to protect the seals and advise visitors.
